Overstrand Tourism Study: Big Changes Coming to How the Region is Promoted

A major study on the local tourism economy was presented to the Overstrand Mayoral Committee on August 25, 2026. Conducted by Professor Jayne Rogerson, the research looks at what local businesses and residents actually need, comparing the Overstrand to other top tourism spots in South Africa and overseas.

The goal is simple: fix local tourism management and bring more visitors to the area.

What the Research Found

The study gathered input through face-to-face interviews and online surveys with local business owners, residents, and provincial tourism officials. It found that the municipality needs a more modern, professional approach to support local businesses and attract tourists.

Key Recommendations for Council

The report recommends three main actions for the municipal council:

  • Bring Back the “Cape Whale Coast” Name: Tourists don’t search for or recognize the word “Overstrand.” The report recommends switching back to the Cape Whale Coast brand, which travelers actually know and love.
  • Set Up an Independent Tourism Office: The municipality is looking into creating an independent Destination Management Organisation (DMO). This would run tourism professionally rather than relying solely on municipal bureaucracy.
  • Hire a New Tourism Manager: The report urges the municipality to fill the vacant Tourism Manager post immediately so there is a dedicated person linking local businesses with local government.

What Happens Next

Municipal official R. Louw has been tasked with creating an action plan to start carrying out these changes, with initial steps targeted for August 31, 2026.
